The 5th Port Dollymount Sea Scouts are incredibly fortunate to call a truly unique and historic location our home. Our den is situated on the beautiful Bull Island in Dublin Bay, a stunning natural setting that offers unparalleled opportunities for both land and water-based scouting adventures.
You'll find our den nestled among the Bull Island cottages, just a short distance over the iconic wooden bridge. This prime spot provides us with immediate access to the expansive waters of Dublin Bay, making it an ideal base for our comprehensive Sea Scouting programme.
The rich maritime history of the area and the natural beauty of the island enhance every activity, offering a dynamic and inspiring environment for our young people to learn and grow. Bull Island is less than 200 years old and developed as a consequence of the construction of the North Bull Wall. More information on this incredible Nature Reserve can be found here.
Being on Bull Island allows us to:
Directly access the water: Launching our boats, kayaks, and canoes for training and expeditions is straightforward and efficient.
Embrace nature: The island provides a fantastic natural classroom for environmental awareness, hiking, and outdoor skills.
Connect with local heritage: Our den's location on an island steeped in history enriches the scouting experience.
Our home, affectionately known as "The Crows Nest", has a deep history on Bull Island, with a near-continuous scouting presence in this area since 1912. The original nissen hut, built in 1952, has seen many adventures, and over the years, our facilities have expanded to meet the needs of our growing troop.
Key features of our den include:
Main Deck: Dedicated spaces for weekly parades, training sessions, and social gatherings for all sections.
Boat Deck: Secure storage for our impressive fleet of boats, skiffs, canoes, and kayaks.
Equipment Storage: Areas to safely store all our scouting equipment, from camping gear to pioneering tools.
Workshop Facilities: Spaces where scouts actively participate in maintaining our equipment and boats. This hands-on involvement teaches valuable skills and fosters a strong sense of ownership and responsibility.
We pride ourselves on the state of our den and equipment, which are maintained with great care. Every scout is expected to attend 'Work Parade' each Saturday, where they contribute to the upkeep of the den, boats, and all the equipment we use. We view all our facilities and gear as the collective property of the scouts themselves, encouraging them to look after it with pride. This tradition ensures our resources are always ready for the next adventure and instills a deep sense of responsibility in our members.
