A scout leader is a volunteer who signs up to participate in the guiding and supporting of young people in their development, both through outdoor adventures and Scouting’s core values. They dedicate their personal time to plan and run activities, attend training, and ensure the safety and growth of every Scout under their care. Scouters do all of this voluntarily, driven by a passion for helping youth thrive. It’s important for parents and scouts to treat Scout leaders with respect and appreciation, understanding that they are giving their time selflessly. Open communication and support from parents make a big difference, as it helps Scouters continue delivering a positive and enriching experience for all Scouts.
We encourage parents to support scouters by encouraging their scout to:
Respect Leaders and Peers: Show respect to leaders, fellow Scouts, and the values of Scouting.
Attend Regularly: Participate in meetings, activities, and camps as often as possible to get the most from the experience.
Be Prepared: Always come to meetings and activities with the required equipment, uniform, and a positive attitude.
Follow the Scout Law and Promise: Uphold the principles of Scouting by living with honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Work as a Team: Cooperate with other Scouts, contribute to group tasks, and help others when needed.
Take Initiative: Be proactive in learning new skills, working on badges, and taking on leadership opportunities.
Embrace Challenges: Be open to new experiences and try your best in all activities, even when things get tough.
Respect the Outdoors: Follow Leave No Trace principles and help preserve nature during outdoor activities.
Communicate: Keep leaders informed of any issues, absences, or challenges you may be facing.
Represent Scouting Well: Wear the uniform with pride and behave appropriately, both in and outside of Scouting activities.
As parents you can help support the leaders in the following ways:
Support Your Child: Encourage your child’s participation in Scouting by helping them prepare for meetings and activities.
Communicate: Stay in touch with leaders regarding long term absences, or any concerns.
Respect Leaders: Treat leaders with respect and recognise the time and effort they give voluntarily.
Get Involved: Offer to assist when possible, whether through the Parents and Friends Committee, volunteering to pull a trailer or move gear equipment or supporting group activities.
Ensure Attendance: Help your child attend meetings, activities, and camps regularly and on time.
Complete Forms and Payments Promptly: Submit consent forms, managing medications and subs and activity fees in a timely manner.
Encourage Responsibility: Allow your child to take charge of their Scouting tasks, such as preparing their own uniform and gear.
Be Patient: Understand that leaders are volunteers and be patient with group decisions, knowing everyone is working towards a great Scouting experience for all scouts.
